Parliamentary Debate
Students should be at least 16 years old, have two years of debate experience, or receive coach approval before competing.
Parliamentary debate is a fast-paced, extemporaneous event where teams of two students receive a new resolution just minutes before each round. Debaters must be prepared to argue a wide variety of topics—ranging from factual and value-based issues to policies and hypothetical scenarios. Parli emphasizes quick thinking, persuasive speaking, and a well-rounded knowledge of current events and general subjects. Each round includes 20 minutes of preparation time and lasts approximately 38 minutes.
